Now his team are working on engineering the cells to grow by consuming carbon dioxide - and he thinks we can harness this to set up camp on the Red Planet.

Chickenosaurus
Scientists have undone the progress made by evolution by altering chicken DNA to create embryos with alligator-like snouts instead of beaks. Experts changed the DNA of chicken embryos in the early stage of their development, enabling them to undo evolutionary progress and give the creatures snouts which are thought to have been lost in the cretaceous period millions of years ago. The scientific revelation of 'rewinding' evolution could pave the way for scientists altering DNA in the other direction and use the same process to create species better able to adapt to Earth's climate.

Harry Potter fans who watched enviously as the schoolboy wizard wielded magical time-freezing binoculars will soon be able to buy their own super spyglasses. For designers at Sony have invented binoculars that allow users to pause, rewind and play back whatever they are viewing. The digital devices – reminiscent of the ‘Omnioculars’ used by Potter to watch his favourite sport of Quidditch – could revolutionise birdwatching, horse racing, cricket and even opera.

Virtual Airport Staff Greet Passengers
'Virtual' boarding agents are greeting passengers at a French airport in a bid to jazz up terminals with 21st century avatars who always smile, don't need breaks and never go on strike. The pilot project at Paris' Orly airport began last month, and has so far been met with a mix of amusement and surprise by travellers. So convincing are they that people frequently try to touch and speak with the life-like video images that greet them and direct them to their boarding gate.

Mitsuyuki Ikeda, a researcher from the Okayama Laboratory, came up with the novel approach to number ones after Tokyo Sewage asked him to come up with a way of using up the city's waste.

Goat Bred To Produce Spider Silk
Spider silk and goat milk--what could possibly be the connection? Let's start with the spiders. Humans love spider webs, but aren't so crazy about their builders. While spiders make some people flinch, there's no escaping the appreciation for their masterful web construction.
"There's a lot of interest in spider silk fibers because they're stronger than almost any other manmade fiber and they're also elastic," says Randy Lewis, professor of molecular biology at the University of Wyoming in Laramie.
Since ancient times, there's been a fascination with spider webs because of that combination of qualities. There's folklore going back to the first century A.D., when spider webs were used as dressings for wounds. Twenty-first century experts are looking at silk for many of the same reasons.
"So there are a lot of applications," continues Lewis. "People are interested in them for things like artificial ligaments and artificial tendons, bulletproof vests and even car airbags--something that would allow you to be contained, but not blown back in your seat."
But, whether it's for super-strong sutures for surgery or an air bag, how do you come up with enough raw material? Spider farms have been tried, but arachnids tend to kill each other.
"The problem is that the spiders are territorial, and so no matter what you do, there are only a certain number of spiders you can put in a certain space," says Lewis.
That's where the goats come in. With help from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Lewis and his team have figured out a way to put the spider's silk-making genes into goats.

How Low Can You Go?
He once promised to send man to outer space and now entrepreneur and daredevil Richard Branson is turning his attention to another of the world's greatest undiscovered surfaces, in the shape of the sea floor. The Virgin owner, together with director James Cameron and Internet mastermind Eric E.Schmidt are investing in the latest sea craft with the intention of plunging to depths previously unseen for man. Developers Triton have already created their own craft and the company's president Patrick Lahey revealed the host of discoveries that could soon be made including a close view of where the Titanic collapsed at the bottom of the ocean.

But in the 20 years since, it has become an inextricable part of the lives of billions of people.
